Neil Parish MEP (EPP-ED, United Kingdom), Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture of the European Parliament is organising a hearing "Progress without Pain - Alternatives to Animal Experiments" in the European Parliament.

The hearing takes place on Wednesday 13th February, from 5.00-7.00pm in room PHS 4B001 of the European Parliament in Brussels.

Among the participants are Stavros Dimas, European Commissioner for the Environment, Claude Reiss, President of Antidote Europe, Wolfgang Dekant, Institute of Toxicology, Würzburg University, Johan Rönnelid, Unit of Clinical Immunology, Uppsala University, Sonja van Tichelen, Director of Eurogroup for Animals.

Modern - reliable - cost efficient - animal friendly - alternatives to animal experiments Revision of 86/609, the Animal Experiments Directive is in due process. One objective of the directive is to stimulate alternatives to animal experiments. But the number of animals used in experiments is increasing in Europe. What can be done to minimise or even phase out some of the animal experiments altogether? In September last year, Written Declaration 40/2007 on the phasing out of primate research passed with a significant majority. Will the revision of Directive 86/609 meet the challenge of phasing out experiments on animals?
