Next Monday, on the 22nd of January 2007, Maria Assunção Esteves MEP and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation will organise a conference on "The role of media in the construction of a political Europe", which will take place in Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon. The opening session, which will start at 10am, will be chaired by Luís Marques Mendes, President of PSD.

The conference's aim is to discuss the role of media in forming a "European public sphere", addressing questions such as:

  • Is it possible to construct a political Europe attractive to its citizens?
  • Can an ethical commitment by the media with the idea of a union of people be considered?
  • Can a new kind of relationship between the media, the European institutions and other actors be considered?
The programme will feature the following speakers: Henrique Monteiro, weekly newspaper "Expresso"; Teresa de Sousa, daily newspaper "Público"; Francisco Sarsfield Cabral, Rádio Renascença; Luís Marques, Rádio Televisão Portuguesa; Martim Cabral, SIC TV; Pedro Magalhães, Universidade de Lisboa; Carlos Gaspar, Universidade Nova de Lisboa; Joachim Broudré-Gröger, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Portugal; Michael Däumer, Director of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation for Portugal and Spain, and Thomas Poguntke, Bochum University.
