Conference on Biodiversity
l-r: Frieda Brepoels MEP (EPP-ED, Belgium), Stavros Dimas, European Commissioner in charge of Environmental Policies, Marie Anne Isler Béguin MEP, and Avril Doyle MEP (EPP-ED, Ireland)
Frieda Brepoels MEP and Avril Doyle MEP attended a meeting on Biological Diversity in Curitiba, Brazil's 'ecological capital', from 20 to 31 March. Signed by 150 government leaders at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, the Convention on Biological Diversity is dedicated to promoting sustainable development.

The Convention recognises that biological diversity has to do with plants, animals, micro-organisms and their ecosystems but also with people and our need for food security, medicines, fresh air, water, shelter, and a clean and healthy environment in which to live. More than 3,000 deputies and 100 Environment Ministers participated in the meeting which was aimed at establishing a road map by 2010, in order to substantially reduce the loss of biodiversity.
