The South and East Mediterranean and the Middle East are areas of vital strategic importance to the European Union, which both the EU Council and the European Commission have identified as key external relations priorities for the EU. The debate was divided into four panels: The Future of the EU-Mediterranean Policy: Which Options; The Role of the United Nations in Cyprus; The EU: a Key Player to Promote the Cyprus Settlement and The EU: a Key Player to Promote a Secure and Lasting Peace in the Eastern Mediterranean.
