Parliament adopts Charter of Fundamental Rights
Wednesday, 28 November 2007
European Parliament, Brussels
|
The European parliament has debated and has officially approved the Charter of Fundamental Rights during the mini-plenary session on 28th-29th November.
|
The EPP-ED Group played a pioneering role in the promotion of the Charter and organised a special celebration on Wednesday, 28th November at which all Group Members were invited to sign the document before the plenary sitting.
The decision to draw up a Charter of Fundamental Rights for the European Union was taken at the Cologne European Council, held on 3 and 4 June 1999. The Charter of Fundamental Rights constitutes a cornerstone document which brings together in a single text all the civil, political, economic and social rights of both European citizens and of all those living in the Union.
These rights are divided into six main chapters: Dignity, Freedoms, Equality, Solidarity, Citizens’ Rights and Justice.
Each year since 2001, the European Parliament has drawn up a report on respect for the rights enshrined in the Charter.
