Fernand HERMAN

Former minister and parliamentarian Fernand HERMAN has died unexpectedly at the age of 73.

Prof Herman was a member both of the Belgian federal parliament and, from 1970 to 1999, of the European Parliament. A fervent European, he was tirelessly committed to a deeper European Union, one with sturdier institutions, and more effective policies.

Both for the EPP-ED Group and for the European People's Party, to which he made important contributions to the political programme, Fernand Herman was an influential and much-respected figure.


Doctorate in law and degree in economics from the Catholic University of Louvain; former director of SNI (Belgian National Investment Company); Minister for Economic Affairs (1975-1977); Senator (1977-1978); Member of the Chamber of Representatives (1978-1980); Vice-President of the PSC; Member of the EPP Group bureau. MEP since 17 July 1979.

EP offices held: Member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and Industrial Policy; the Committee on Institutional Affairs and the Committee on the Rules of Procedure, the Verification of Credentials and Immunitites; member of the Sub-committee on Monetary Affairs; member of the Delegation for relations with the Member States of ASEAN and the ASEAN Interparliamentary Organisation (AIPO) and the Republic of Korea.
