Election Observation

Because of its commitment to human rights and democracy, the European Parliament plays an important rôle in the election observation process.The Conference of Presidents has set up a Coordination Group, which submits proposals for European Parliament election observation missions.

The implementing provisions for election observation missions state that the aim of election observation missions is to strengthen the legitimacy of the national electoral process, to provide more effective human rights protection and to contribute to conflict resolution.

There are procedures for coordination between Parliament, the Council and the Commission and with other international organisations, with a view to improving Community election assistance and observation missions.
