Political System
Republic. Present Constitution adopted on 20 August 1949, revised in 1989 with changes necessary for the transition.
Head of State
President László SÓLYOM
The President is elected by the Parliament in a secret ballot for a term of five years and may serve a maximum of two consecutive terms in office. Although the presidential role is largely ceremonial, the President does have considerable rights in terms of foreign and domestic politics, and he is Head of the Armed Forces.The President appoints the Members of the Cabinet and, based on his recommendation, the Prime Minister is elected by the Parliament.
Prime Minister
Ferenc GYURCSÁNY (30 September 2004, 23 April 2006 reelected ). Members of the Cabinet are nominated by the Prime Minister and appointed by the President.
Legislature
Uni-cameral. Of the 386 Members of the National Assembly (Országgyűlés), 176 are elected from individual constituencies, 120 from regional lists and 90 from national lists.
Government Elections
The last parliamentary elections took place in April 2006. The governing coalition consists of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSzP) and the Alliance of Free Democrats (SzDSz).
