EPP-ED Chronology - 2001-2008
27 June 2007 Angela Merkel, Federal Chancellor of Germany and outgoing President-in-Office of the European Council, awarded EPP-ED Group Robert Schuman Medal. Hans-Gert Poettering MEP, President of the European Parliament, awarded the title of 'Honorary Chairman of the EPP-ED Group'.
6 June 2007 Following the first elections to the European Parliament in Bulgaria on 20 May 2007, 5 newly-elected Bulgarian MEPs from the GERB Party join the EPP-ED Group. The EPP-ED Group is composed of 278 Members.
16 January 2007 Hans-Gert Poettering, Member of the EPP-ED Group, elected as President of the European Parliament. 1 January 2007 New MEPs from Bulgaria and Romania become Members of the EPP-ED Group. The UDF, DSB and DP from Bulgaria and PD, DP, UDMR and DFDR from Romania join the EPP-ED Group. The EPP-ED Group is composed of 277 Members.
14 November 2006 Hans-Gert Poettering nominated as EPP-ED Group candidate for President of the European Parliament. 9-11 November 2006 Xth Dialogue between the Orthodox Churches and the EPP-ED Group in Bratislava. 11 October 2006 EPP-ED MEPs awarded an unprecedented 7 out of 8 'MEP Awards'. 26 September 2006 Lars Wohlin MEP (Sweden) joins the EPP-ED Group. EPP-ED Schuman Medal awarded to His Holiness Pope John Paul II in honour of his outstanding contribution to the integration of Europe by Hans-Gert Poettering, Chairman of the EPP-ED Group, during a private audience in the private library of the Pope. Re-election of Hans-Gert Poettering as Chairman of the EPP-ED Group. Number of Vice-Chairmen enlarged to nine. The Members of the Czech SNK-ED become Members of the Group. The Czech ODS, Portuguese Partido Popular and Italian Partito Pensionati join the ED part of EPP-ED Group. The EPP-ED Group is composed of 268 Members. 5-8 July 2004 EPP-ED Study Days in Budapest, Hungary. Declaration on European Elections adopted. 10-13 June 2004 Sixth direct elections to the European Parliament. Largest elections with 450 millions citizens in 25 Member States of the European Union. Overall turnout was 45.5 per cent. The EPP-ED Group wins again being, with 278 Members, the largest political Group in the European Parliament.
