EPP-ED Chronology - 1991-2000
14 January 1992Election of Egon KLEPSCH, Chairman of the EPP Group, as President of the European Parliament. Leo TINDEMANS is elected to succeed him as Chairman of the Group. 18 March 1992 Finland applies for membership. 1 May 1992 The British and Danish Conservative MEPs (together with some French UDF MEPs) join the EPP Group as allied members, bringing the total to 162 Members. 2 May 1992 The Treaty establishing the European Economic Area (the 12 member states of the Union plus the 7 member states of EFTA (Austria, Finland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland)) is signed in Oporto. Switzerland later rejected the Treaty by referendum on 6 December 1992. June-September 1992 The Maastricht Treaty is rejected by referendum in Denmark, accepted in Ireland, and very narrowly accepted in France. September 1992 Four French MEPs of the UDF, formerly in the Liberal Group, join the EPP Group. 11-13 November 1992 IX EPP Congress in Athens. Adoption of a new EPP Basic Programme. 25 November 1992 Norway applies for membership. 11/12 December 1992 The European Council meeting in Edinburgh decides on the location of the institutions, the financial perspective until 1999, and a new deal for Denmark. 1 January 1993 Entry into force of the Single Market. 18 May 1993 Maastricht Treaty accepted in a second referendum in Denmark. 23 June 1993 Fortieth anniversary of the founding of the Christian-Democrat Group in the ECSC Common Assembly. 1 November 1993 Maastricht Treaty enters into force marking the establishment of the European Union. 8-10 December 1993 X EPP Congress in Brussels. Adoption of the Action Plan for the EPP Group in the 1994-1999 parliamentary term: "Europe 2000 - Unity in Diversity". 1994 Following the establishment of the Committee of the Regions as a new institution of the European Union, the EPP Group was formed with 85 Members under the chairmanship of Jos CHABERT (CVP, Belgium). 1 April 1994 Hungary applies for membership. 8 April 1994 Poland applies for membership. 9-12 June 1994 Fourth direct elections to the European Parliament. Overall turnout was 58.9 per cent . The EPP member parties won 125 seats in the fourth European elections. The incorporation of like-minded MEPs (British and Danish Conservatives and French Liberals) brought the total number of MEPs in the EPP to 157. June-November 1994 Membership of the European Union endorsed by referendum in Austria, Finland, and Sweden but rejected in Norway. July 1994 Wilfried MARTENS, formerly Prime Minister of Belgium, is elected Chairman of the EPP Group. Klaus WELLE elected Secretary-General of the EPP and the EUCD. 1 January 1995 Austria, Finland, and Sweden join the Union. The European Parliament now stands at 626 members. Sixteen new members join the EPP Group: six from Austria, four from Finland and six from Sweden. Five parties join the EPP: the Austrian Österreichische Volkspartei, the Swedish Kristdemokratiska Samhällspartiet (now called Kristdemokraterna) and Moderata Samlingspartiet (Moderaterna), the Finnish Kansallinen Kokoomus and the Danish Konservative Folkeparti.
19 January 1995New Commission under President Jacques SANTER endorsed by the European Parliament. 26 March 1995 Schengen Agreement enters into force in the Benelux countries, France, Germany, Portugal, and Spain. 22 June 1995 Romania applies for membership. 27 June 1995 Slovakia applies for membership. 27 October 1995 Latvia applies for membership. 6/7 November 1995 XI EPP Congress in Madrid: "EPP- Force of the Union". Adoption of the basic document: "Capacity to act - democracy and transparency; the European Union on the way to an United Europe (proposals and objectives for the Intergovernmental Conference in 1996)". Foundation of the European Senior Union (ESU). 28 November 1995 Estonia applies for membership. 8 December 1995 Lithuania applies for membership. 14 December 1995 Bulgaria applies for membership. 15/16 December 1995 Madrid European Council agrees that the single currency should be called the "euro". 1996 Wim van VELZEN elected President of EUCD. François BAYROU elected President of EPP Council. Foundation of the Economic and Independent Business Association of the EPP. 17 January 1996 Czech Republic applies for membership. 29 March 1996 Opening in Turin of the Intergovernmental Conference on the revision of the Maastricht Treaty. 10 June 1996 Slovenia applies for membership. 11 November 1996 The Portuguese PSD becomes a full member of the European People's Party, and its MEPs join the EPP Group. The EPP Group has 180 members. 14 January 1997 José-María GIL-ROBLES GIL-DELGADO, Member of the EPP-ED Group, elected as President of the European Parliament. February 1997 Founding Congress of the Youth of the EPP. 16/17 June 1997 European Council meeting in Amsterdam reaches agreement on a new treaty. The Treaty of Amsterdam is signed on 2 October 1997. 9-11 November 1997 XII EPP Congress in Toulouse: "We all belong to one world". Adoption of a Strategy paper on employment , and a Resolution on the enlargement of the European Union. Due to an amendment of the EPP statutes, integration of the EUCD parties into the EPP is definitively possible. Parties who are near to the EPP can be admitted now as associated members without requiring the condition of concrete application negociations to the EU with these countries, the simple demande of EU adhesion of these countries is sufficient. 21/22 November 1997 Jean-Claude JUNCKER, Christian-Democrat Prime Minister of Luxembourg, presides over special meeting of the European Council on employment. 12/13 December 1997 Luxembourg meeting of the European Council sets in train enlargement negotiations with effect from 1998. June 1998 MEPs of Forza Italia join the EPP Group. 4-6 Februar 1999 XIII EPP Congress in Bruxelles: Adoption of the Action Programme for the fifth EP legislature "On the Way to the 21st Century". Re-election of Wilfried MARTENS as EPP President. Integration of EUCD into the EPP. Klaus WELLE is elected Secretary-General of the EPP Group in the EP. Alejandro AGAG LONGO, is elected Secretary-General of the EPP. 10-13 June 1999 Fifth direct elections to the European Parliament. Overall turnout was 49.4 per cent. The EPP Group becomes with 233 Members the largest political Group in the European Parliament. The Socialist Group is composed by 180 Members. July 1999 Election of Hans-Gert POETTERING as Chairman of the EPP-ED Group. Renaming of the EPP Group into "Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats". The Members of the RPR (Gaullist) Party become allied members of the Group.
