Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly
From 18th to 20th December, the first plenary session of the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly will take place in Brussels.

| Reports for discussion and vote on the plenary agenda are: "EU-Latin America relations with a view to the Vth Lima Summit and with special reference to democratic governance", "Challenges and opportunities resulting from globalization for the economic and trade relations between the EU and LA countries", and "Sustainable development and environmental balance in the relations between the EU Member States and Latin America in the context of global warming". |
The assembly's three standing committees will also convene in the margins of the session.

Summit of the EPP-ED Chairmen of national parliamentary groups
EPP-ED Group Chairman Joseph Daul MEP will be participating at the Summit of Chairmen of the EPP-ED parliamentary groups in the national parliaments, organised by the UMP in the French National Assembly in Paris on Tuesday 18 December.

| Chairman Daul will be focusing on the cooperation between National Parliaments and the European Parliament. The Summit takes place in the framework of the preparation of the French Presidency in the second half of 2008 and will include discussions with the French Prime Minister, François Fillon, and other Government Ministers. |
UN Climate Change Conference
Six Members of the EPP-ED Group are participating in the UN Conference on Climate Change between the 11th and 14th December in Bali, Indonesia.

Participating EPP-ED Group Members include: Alejo Vidal-Quadras (Spain), Vice-President of the European Parliament, Chairman of the delegation, Miroslav Ouzký (Czech Republic), Chairman of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, Vice-Chairman of the delegation, Karl-Heinz Florenz (Germany), Rapporteur for the Temporary Committee on Climate Change, Avril Doyle (Ireland), Eija-Riitta Korhola (Finland), and Anders Wijkman (Sweden).

The European Parliament's delegation is organising a roundtable with parliamentarians from participating countries, in order to begin build a post-2012 framework on climate protection (commitments made under the Kyoto Protocol end in 2012).

EU-Africa Summit
A 25-Member ad-hoc delegation will attend the EU-Africa Summit in Lisbon to hold a Pre-Summit on 7 December with the Pan-African Parliament (PAP). The EPP-ED Group will be represented by 9 Members. Hans-Gert Pöttering MEP, President of the European Parliament and Ms Mongella, President of the Pan-African Parliament will be addressing the summit on Saturday 8 December. The Pre-Summit will adopt an EP-PAP Joint Declaration on the EU-Africa Strategy to be later adopted at the Summit itself.

Mental Health in employment
John Bowis MEP (EPP-ED, United Kingdom) is hosting a luncheon debate on Wednesday, 5th December, in association with Mental Health Europe (MHE) highlighting the issue of mental well-being in the workplace.
|
The aim is to promote mental well-being in employment as an integral part of EU policy.
|
One in five people at work in Europe suffers from a high level of stress at work, the second most common health symptom. Stressors at work increase the risk of anxiety, depression and burn out.
|
John Bowis, who is Parliament's rapporteur on the Green Paper on Mental Health, says that Europe needs a comprehensive and coordinated strategy to address the challenges of an ever-evolving and demanding working environment, affecting the mental well-being of people at work and beyond.

First Symposium on Sustainable Transport
Luís Queiró MEP (EPP-ED, Portugal) is organising the first Symposium on Sustainable Transport in the European Parliament in the Plenary chamber (PHS 3C050) on Monday 3 December at 13.45.
|
Mr Queiró is a Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Transport and Tourism of the European Parliament. The Four roundtables of the Symposium will be attended by several experts from the European institutions as well as industry representatives.

EP Citizen's Forum on the Future of Europe
Lambert van Nistelrooij MEP (The Netherlands), will participate in a citizen's forum on the Future of Europe in Eindhoven at the STRP Festival, The Netherlands on Sunday 25th November.

Sexual harassment in the workplace
Anna Záborská MEP (Slovakia), Chair of the Committee on Women´s Rights and Gender Equality will be chairing a hearing on Sexual harassment in the workplace. The hearing takes place on Wednesday 21st November.
|
Speakers will include researchers, trade union and industry representatives. It takes place in ASP 3G2 at 10.00-12.30pm.
|
It is the only international assembly in which the representatives of various countries sit together regularly with the aim of promoting the interdependence of North and South. Representatives of 78 ACP states meet their 78 European Parliament counterparts (MEPs) in plenary session for one week twice a year. The Joint Parliamentary Assembly meets alternately in an ACP country and an EU country. The institution is governed by common, democratic rules.

Among the reports for vote at this assembly included a report co-authored by Astrid Lulling MEP (Luxembourg) and Timothy Harris (St Kitts & Nevis) on the impact of foreign direct investment in ACP states, and a report co-authored by John Bowis MEP (United Kingdom) and Martin Magga (Solomon Islands), on access to healthcare and medicines, with a particular focus on neglected diseases. Other topics for debate included: The EU-Africa strategy, the Lisbon EU-Africa Summit in Lisbon in December, and developments in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia.

EP Delegation to Kosovo
The European Parliament delegation to the legislative elections in Kosovo on 17 November will be led by Doris Pack MEP (EPP-ED, Germany), Chairwoman of the EP Delegation for relations with the countries of south-east Europe. Marian Jean Marinescu (EPP-ED, Romania) is also a member of the delegation.

The elections to a Kosovo-wide Assembly are very important as the elected body will be given the task to choose a provisional President and government for the region, whose final status is still the subject of international diplomatic discussions with Serbia, under the auspices of the United Nations.

World Diabetes Day 2007: Young People and Diabetes
John Bowis MEP (United Kingdom) is organising and introducing a lunchtime discussion on diabetes and young people with Diabetes Youth Representatives on Wednesday 14th November in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
|
The meeting is one of several activities in the European Parliament marking the 1st anniversary of the UN Declaration on Diabetes. Schoolchildren with diabetes from all 27 Member States will be travelling to Strasbourg to meet MEPs and EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou.

European SME Policy - Challenges Ahead
A conference organised by the EPP-ED Group and the European Association of Crafts, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises will take place in the European Parliament, ASP 3E2, on Thursday 8 November at 15.00-18.00 hours.

The conference will be focused especially on the results of the European State Aid Reform on the SMEs. It will be opened by Othmar Karas MEP (Austria), President of the SME Intergroup and Vice-Chairman of the EPP-ED. Among the speakers will be Marianne Thyssen MEP (Belgium), Vice-Chairwoman of the EPP-ED and Giles Chichester MEP (United Kingdom).

Conference on Student Mobility in Europe
A conference organised by the EPP-ED Group and Student Council of European University Foundation-Campus Europae will take place in the European Parliament, ASP 5H1, on Thursday 8 November at 8.30-14.00 hours.

The conference on promoting high quality in student mobility in Europe is co-organised by Erna Hennicot-Schoepges MEP (Luxembourg). Among the speakers will be Doris Pack MEP (Germany) and Ján Figel', EU Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth.

The Future of the Financial Markets Supervision
A seminar of the EPP-ED Group will be focused on discussion with experts about the future of the supervision of financial markets in the EU. The seminar will take place in the European Parliament, ASP 3E2, on Wednesday 7 November at 15.00-18.30 hours.

The seminar will be introduced by EPP-ED Coordinator in the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs Alexander Radwan MEP (Germany) and the two panels (Supervision of financial markets in the EU. Conference on Tibet
The Tibet Intergroup of the European Parliament is organising a Parliamentary Conference on Tibet on Thursday 8th November. Thomas Mann MEP, Chairman of the Intergroup on Tibet, will address the conference, which will focus on environmental pollution in China and the 2008 Olympic Games.

The conference will begin at 9.30am in room ASP 3E2 until 1pm, and from 3pm to 5.30pm in room PHS 3C50 of the European Parliament.

The opening of the Tibetan Mandala takes place on Tuesday 6th November. A Mandala is a sand painting of approximately one square meter. It has become a generic term for any plan, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically, a microcosm of the Universe from the human perspective.

Industry, Research and Energy Committee Delegation to the USA
A delegation of the Industry Committee and the Parliament's scientific research panel STOA will visit the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the United States' national research center in Tennessee, from Thursday 25th October to Sunday 28th October. The MEPs will also meet representatives of the US Congress, the US State Department and the Department of Energy to exchange views on energy and research policies.

Delegation for Relations with Korea
Members of the Parliament's Delegation for Relations with the Korean Peninsula, including its Chairman Hubert Pirker MEP (Austria), and Jas Gawronski MEP (Italy) will visit North Korea from 23-27 October to take part in the 3rd EU-DPRK Economic Workshop. This forum allows for an exchange of ideas between North Korean economic officials and MEPs and European business leaders.

After the 4-day visit, they will be joined by Astrid Lulling MEP (Luxembourg), and Petya Stavreva MEP (Bulgaria), for a visit to South Korea, where they will meet with lawmakers and government officials.

The future of plant protection in Europe
Horst Schnellhardt MEP (Germany) is organising an information day "The future of plant protection in Europe - Keeping the balance" in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 22-23 October.

The event will begin with opening of an information stand in front of room 100, in the Winston Churchill Building, on Monday 22 October at 17.00. The information stand will feature information to demonstrate the many benefits that plant protection products contribute to agriculture and our food. Centrist Democrat International (CDI) meeting in Rome
The leaders of the Centrist Democrat International (CDI) gathered in Rome on 20th of September to coordinate their international political action. The meeting was mainly focused on freedom and security, and the commitment of the CDI for promoting democracy in the world. |
| The meeting is promoted by the President of the CDI, Pier Ferdinando Casini. Several Heads of State and Government, as well as representatives of the CDI member parties coming from Europe, America, Africa and Asia will participate in the meeting. The meeting will be hosted by UDC (Unione dei Democratici Cristiani e di Centro), one of the member parties of the CDI. The leaders of the CDI will meet His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI in the Official Residence of Castel Gandolfo on Friday 21st of September. |

EPP-ED Presidency visit to Washington
The Presidency of the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats (EPP-ED) in the European Parliament is visiting Washington D.C. from July 17-20, 2007 for a series of strategic high-level meetings. |
| Led by EPP-ED Group Chairman Joseph Daul MEP (UMP/France), the leadership of the strongest political Group of the European Parliament, accompanied by several of Parliament's foremost lawmakers, will hold talks with senior Republican and Democrat House members, as well as with leading representatives of the US administration and the World Bank, culminating in a meeting with US Vice President Dick Cheney in the White House on Friday, 20 July.

José Ignacio Salafranca Sánchez-Neyra will lead the European Parliament's delegation from the Euro-Latin Parliamentary Assembly (EUROLAT)- composed of 60 MEPs and 60 MPs of the Latin American Parliaments - in a meeting of its three standing committees on 6-7 July in Quito (Ecuador), to prepare for the General Assembly, scheduled for October/November 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal.

The ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, which brings together 78 Members of the European Parliament and 78 MPs from African, Caribbean and Pacific countries, meets for its 13th session in Wiesbaden, Germany. The opening sitting takes place on Monday 25 June, and will be followed by a press conference at 1pm in the Kurhaus, Wiesbaden. |

The European Union will review its Common Position on Cuba in June 2007. This is the 16th revision of this common policy and it will most likely not be changed. What have been the results of this policy which has a declared objective "to encourage a process of transition to a pluralist democracy and the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms as well as a sustainable recovery and improvement in the living standards of the Cuban people"? Among the speakers at the conference will be Osvaldo Alfonso Valdes, a former political prisoner, and María Liusa Bascur, International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights/Cuba Futuro.

Intercultural Dialogue between Europe and Russia: Towards a Borderless Europe
An international conference organised by Stefano Zappalà MEP (EPP-ED, Italy) will be held in the European Parliament, room A3E2 on Wednesday 6 June, 16.00-18.30 hours.

The conference aims to encourage a meaningful dialogue among the distinguished speakers to answer questions such as "Is the clash of civilisations really unavoidable or could it instead be based on a gigantic misunderstanding due to flawed communication?" and "How can Europe and Russia, for the future, smooth out issues related to communication and trade relations?". This will culminate in a key address entitled "Economic, logical and historic ground between Europe and Russia" which intends to lay the groundwork to illustrate crucial aspects and foster the development of closer ties between Europe and Russia.

The implementation of the electronic communications regulatory framework
A mini-hearing of the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, chaired by Angelika Niebler MEP (EPP-ED, Germany), will focus on electronic communications. The hearing will take place in the European Parliament, ASP 3E2, on Tuesday 5 June at 15.00-18.30 hours.

The role of women in industry
A public hearing on the role of women in industry will be held jointly by the European Parliament's Committees on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) and on Industry, Research and Energy, in the European Parliament, PHS 4B1, on Tuesday 5 June at 10.00-12.30 hours. The hearing will be chaired by Anna Záborská MEP (EPP-ED, Slovakia), Chairwoman of the FEMM Committee.

The hearing is focused on gathering information ahead of the discussion in the European Parliament on the report on the role of women in industry. The discussion points will be the participation of women in the various sectors of industry as well as their working conditions.
