29/09/98: Regional Policy Seminar on 01/10/98 in Brussels - Building on the success of the Structural Funds

The parliamentary Groups of the European People's Party in the European Parliament and in the Committee of the Regions will hold, on Thursday October 1st, a joint conference on the theme "The reform of the structural funds, a challenge for Europe: the regions in the year 2000". The conference will be chaired by Mr. Miguel Arias Cañete (EPP/E), President of the Regional Affairs Committee in the European Parliament.

The conference will be opened by Wilfried Martens (EPP/B), Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, and Juan José Lucas (EPP/E), Chairman of the EPP Group in the Committee of the Regions.

Panellists include Mrs. Benita Ferrero, Austrian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs; Mr. Rudolf Strohmeier (D), Deputy Chief of Cabinet to Franz Fischler; Mr Konstantinos Hatzidakis (EPP/GR), EPP spokesperson in the Regional Affairs Committee of the EP; and Mr. Juan Rodríguez Yuste (E), Director General for EU affairs in the regional Government of Galicia (Spain).

The conference will conclude with speeches from Mr. Daniel Varela (EPP/E)on the reform of the European Regional Development Fund, followed by Mr. Grigorios Apostolakos (EPP/GR) and Mr. Rolf Berend (EPP/D) on the reform of the Cohesion Fund. A debate will follow.

The conference will be held from 3 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. in the European Parliament headquarters in Brussels, Room LEO 1 A 02. Journalists are welcome to attend.
