28/09/98: Senior Citizens' Seminar
On Tuesday (29/9), Chairman of the European People's Party, Wilfried Martens MEP will welcome senior citizens from across Europe to a two day conference on their future in the next century. The Senior Citizens' Seminar, organised jointly by the EPP Group, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, European Senior Citizens Union and the Robert Schuman Foundation, will tackle issues such as the quality of life and the public image of the elderly. The seminar will undoubtedly prove highly stimulating and informative. This conference will act as a briefing session for the EPP Group's contribution at the Senior Citizens' Conference to be held at the European Parliament in Brussels on 1 and 2 October 1998. Important contributions will be made by the Portuguese Ministry of Social Affairs and Professor Lehr of the University of Heidelberg. Other representations will be made by European senior citizens' associations and Christian Democrat MEPs including Mr Barto Pronk and Mr Schiedermeier, draftsman of the report on the Seniors Conference. Vice-president of the EPP, Mrs Oomen-Ruijten MEP will chair the first session on integrating older people into the labour market and improving older people's quality of life. The discussion will be followed by a reception and dinner at which Bernhard Worms, Vice-chairman of the European Union of Conservative Seniors will speak. On Wednesday, Franz-Josef Reuter of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation will chair the discussion on integrating older people into society and correcting negative images of the elderly and conclude on the Group's two day activities.
