EPP GROUP STUDY DAYS IN PORTUGAL



From 8 to 10 July 1998 the Group of the European People's Party under the chairmanship of Wilfried Martens will be meeting in Portugal. The main themes of the meeting will be Agenda 2000 and its consequences for agriculture, regional and environment policy.

The meeting will open with a discussion with PSD leader and Vice President of the EPP, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and leader of the Portuguese delegation in the EPP, Eurico de Melo.

On Thursday, 9 July, in the morning, the President-in-Office of the Council, Austrian Agriculture Minister Wilhelm Molterer will take part in a debate on agriculture and Agenda 2000 in which the agriculture ministers of Germany, Belgium, Spain and Luxembourg, as well as Commissioner Franz Fischler will participate.

In the afternoon the debate will focus on the regional and environmental aspect of Agenda 2000. Mme Waltraud Klasnic, President of the Conference of Austria Governors, will be joined in the discussions by representatives from the European Commission and the World Wildlife Fund.

The meeting will end with a visit to the pavillion of the European Union at the World Expo in Lisbon, where Group members will have an exchange of views with Commissioner de Silguy.
