181 Members of the European Parliament will meet at the first EPP Group visit to Sweden since the nation joined the EU. Apart from studying Sweden as a relatively new member of EU the conference will cover three topics of great importance for the future of Europe. The EPP Group is the second largest grouping in the European Parliament and currently has 181 Members out of the total of 626 for Parliament.

The conference will be opened at 16h00 Monday 8 September by the Moderate Party Chairman and former Prime Minister Carl Bildt, the chairman of the Christian-Democrats Mr Alf Svensson and Mr Wilfried Martens Chairman of the EPP Group. The first session immediately after the opening will be an introduction to the political and social situation in Sweden as well as the experiences of belonging to the EU. Keynote Speakers will be Lars Tobisson, Chairman of the Moderate Parliamentary Group and Staffan Burenstam Linder, head of the Moderate delegation in the EPP Group.

Relations between the Baltic states and the European Union will be discussed Tuesday 9h00 - 12h30 by former High Representative to Bosnia Carl Bildt, European Commissioner Van den Broek, the Prime Minister of Lithuania Vagnorius and the former Russian Prime Minister Gaidar.

A second important subject is Technological development and the competitiveness of Europe. Introductions to the discussion, starting 15h00 on Tuesday, will be made by the executive director of Volvo Leif Johansson and the European Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan.

Finally, on Wednesday 9h00 -11h30 there will be a seminar on the European Monetary Union, covering the recent developments and special Nordic viewpoints of the EMU. Key note speakers will be the Governor of the Swedish Central Bank Urban Bäckström and his French colleague Jean-Claude Trichet.

On Thursday and Friday the EPP Group will hold also its regular Group meeting for the preparation of the plenary session of the Parliament in Strasbourg the following week.

The venue of the meeting will be the Swedish Parliament, Riksdagen, but the programme also includes visits to both the Stockholm Town Hall and the Wasa ship museum.
