The Committee on Agriculture held a public hearing on food security on Wednesday 10 September in the European Parliament. Mairead McGuinness MEP (Ireland), rapporteur of Parliament's report on the Common Agricultural Policy and global food security, and Neil Parish MEP (United Kingdom) Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development participated in the hearing.

Speaking in Brussels in advance of the hearing, Mairead McGuinness said that today's concerns about food security have arisen because of past failures to recognise the warning signs and constraints on food production.
The hearing focused on securing food supplies in the context of rising food prices. Speakers included Jacques Diouf, Director-General of UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, Philip Macharia Kiriro, President, Eastern Africa Farmers Federation, Sister Nora McNamara, missionary nun with great experience of agriculture in the developing world, Ndiogou Fall, President of ROPPA - Network of farmers and producer organisations in West Africa, Edson Mpyisi, Director, Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture, African Union Commission, S.E. Ibrahim Bocar Ba, Ambassador of Mali in Brussels, and Tom Arnold, Chief Executive of Concern Worldwide.
