Maria Luisa Cassanmagnago Cerretti

Former Vice-President of the European Parliament
Maria Luisa Cassanmagnago Cerretti was born in Bergamo on April 7 1929. A member of Italian Democrazia Cristiana, she became a Member of the Italian Parliament in 1976. She was a Member of the European Parliament from 1979 to 1994.
She served as a Vice-Chairwoman of the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democratic Group) in 1979-1984 and as Vice-President of the European Parliament in 1982-1987.
Her other political functions included chairing the Political Affairs Committee of the European Parliament (1991-1992) and she was the European Co-President of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly (1992-1994).
After leaving the European Parliament, she was a President of the Committee of the Lombard Initiative for the European Federal State until her death on 4 August 2008.
