During his time in the European Parliament, he fought for the rights of Gibraltarians, he fought against the Soviet regime in the 1980s, he took on the airlines to fight for the freedom of the skies, and was a champion for human rights around the world winning the friendship of Lech Walesa, Nelson Mandela, and Andrei Sakharov. He was awarded the Schuman Medal shortly before his retirement from the European Parliament. He will be sadly missed."
