EPP-ED Vice-Chairman Gunnar Hökmark MEP (Sweden) chaired an EPP-ED hearing on the future of nuclear waste management on Tuesday 3 July in the European Parliament.

Proposals of the increased use of nuclear power as a solution to climate change have been put forward in several European countries.

Gunnar Hökmark and the Group's spokesman on nuclear energy issues Herbert Reul MEP (Germany) each chaired a panel debate and the ensuing discussions. Key speakers included Andris Piebalgs, the European Commissioner for Energy, Dr Hans Wanner, Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate, as well as other experts and trade representatives.
