EPP-ED Hearing on Long Distance Fleet Competitiveness

The EPP-ED Spokeswoman of the Fisheries Committee, Carmen Fraga, chaired a public hearing on Tuesday, 28 November, on a proposal to improve the long distance fleet by measures to enhance the competitiveness of the sector over the next few years.

The European Commissioner for Fisheries, Joe Borg, as well as experts and representatives of the sector, discussed what should be the appropriate measures to foster the competitiveness of the EU long distance fleet, which competes with ships from third countries which are not submitted to European technical, social and sanitary standards and have the ability to sell their products on EU markets.

Among the participants at the hearing were the Managing Director of the 'Albacora' Group, Ignacio Sáez de Ibarra, the President of 'Orthongel', Yvon Riva, and the representatives of the Pelagic Freezer-Trawler Association, Gerard J van Balsfoort, and ADAPI, Antonio Schiappa Cabral.
