Conference on the Role of Textbooks in the Middle East Conflict

The existence and role of radical teaching and school textbooks in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been an issue of growing preoccupation for the European Union. To assess the current state of affairs in this domain, Jana Hybášková MEP (EPP-ED, Czech Republic), Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Chair of the EP Delegation for relations with Israel, organised a conference on the subject.

The event was opened by Hans-Gert Poettering MEP, Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament.

The aim was to provide an authoritative assessment of the content of both Palestinian and Israeli school (including religious streams) textbooks and textbooks from other countries in the region, and to suggest ways for the EU to exercise greater influence over the textbooks' content. Dr Yohanan Manor and Dr Arnon Groiss from the Center for the Monitoring of the Impact of Peace (www.edume.org) presented this assessment.
