EPP-ED Hearing on Cultural Heritage, Research and Sustainable Development
l-r: Cristina Gutiérrez-Cortines MEP (EPP-ED, Spain), Prof. Robert Pickard, School of the Built Environment Northumbria University, and Francine Mariani-Ducray, Director of Museums of France
On the initiative of Cristina Gutiérrez-Cortines MEP, the EPP-ED Group organised a public hearing on research and cultural heritage in order to explore the possibilities offered by the 7th EU Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities to finance research projects in this field.

The EU is already a world leader in restoration techniques of cultural heritage and Member States host some 60% of the world's cultural heritage. The aim of the hearing was to focus on further research in this area which has the potential of creating economic growth and jobs at a time when the EU is pursuing the goals of sustainable development and better preservation of its cultural heritage.

The hearing was divided into two main sessions: 'Cultural Heritage, Research and Sustainable Development', chaired by Mrs Gutiérrez-Cortines, and 'Future Research Needs', chaired by Vasco Graça Moura MEP. Each session was introduced by experts from different museums, archaeological and arts institutes and professors of the main universities of different Member States.
