Fifty years on from the death of Alcide de Gasperi, the Fondazione Alcide de Gasperi, in cooperation with the Presidency of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament, presented the international exhibition 'Alcide de Gasperi - a European before his time' in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The exhibition focused on the life of this renowned statesman, including his work, speeches, letters and numerous documents, photographs and other objects.

Following showings in Rome, Milan, Trento, Berlin, Bari, Trieste, Turin, Bologna and Florence, the exhibition was officially opened in a ceremony including the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the EPP-ED Group, Hans-Gert Poettering and Lorenzo Cesa, Vice-President of the European Commission, Franco Frattini, the Italian Minister for Culture, Carlo Giovanardi, and the President and Vice-Presidents of the Foundation Alcide de Gasperi, Senator Giulio Andreotti, Romana De Gasperi and Dr Franco Nobili.

The exhibition in Strasbourg, supported by the President of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, formed part of a programme of events marking the 50th anniversary of the death of Alcide de Gasperi, which officially begun in Rome on 14 October 2003 and ended with this official commemoration of his life in Strasbourg.

This stage of the exhibition was carried out with the cooperation and support of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament, the collaboration of Societá Cattolica di Assicurazione of Verona and the Management Engineering Consulting of Turin.
