Public Hearing on Patents on Computer-Implemented Inventions

On Thursday 2 June, the EPP-ED Group organised a public hearing on 'Patents on Computer-Implemented Inventions'. Chaired by Hans-Peter Mayer MEP, Piia-Noora Kauppi MEP, EPP-ED shadow rapporteur on this issue, introduced the topic followed by a panel debate with Robert Lind, Cornell University, Brian Kahin, University of Michigan, Theodora Karamanli, European Patent Office and Jurgen Betten, Betten & Resch, Munich.

In a second panel debate, representatives from the industry shared their views with the audience. Kai Brandt from Siemens, Lauri Kivinen from Nokia and David Axmark from MySQL were invited to participate in this debate. The third and final panel comprised representatives from interest groups, such as Fredrik Egrelius, ACEA, Maria Cimaglia, UEAPME, Hugo Lueders, CompTIA and Oliver Lorentz, EMCITA. Klaus-Heiner Lehne MEP, EPP-ED Co-ordinator in the Committee on Legal Affairs, drew the final conclusions of this hearing.
