Fixing the Connections - Top TELECOMS Leaders in EP

A public hearing organised by the EPP-ED Group looked into the key area of how electronic communications are regulated, the current state of implementation, and steps towards a possible review.

Attended by top people in the industry, the hearing was opened by Lorenzo Cesa MEP, Vice-Chairman of the EPP-ED Group, and the European Commissioner for the Information Society and Media, Mrs Viviane Reding.

Under the spotlight, inter alia, was the state of implementation of the EU's Electronic Communication Package, the regulation versus competition debate in the light of developments in the market, and the role of innovation and research in the European ICT industry.

Parliamentary speakers included the MEPs Paul Rübig, Angelika Niebler, and Malcolm Harbour.

Participants from the Telecoms industry were: Marco Tronchetti-Provera (Executive Chairman of Telecom Italia), Karl-Uwe Ricke (Executive Chairman of Deutsche Telecom), Lars-Johan Jarnheimer (CEO Tele2), Roger Wilson (Managing Director, ECTA), Duco Sickinghe (CEO Telenet), Joëlle Gauthier (Head of Innovation & Research, Alcatel), Fabio Colasanti (Director-General Information Society and Media at the EC), Kip Meek (Senior Partner OFCOM), Daniel Pataki (Chairman of the Hungarian NRA), Achim Kaspar (President Association of Alternative Telecommunications System Operators - VAT), Alberto Calero (New Services Director, AMENA), and Christian Morales (Vice-President and General Manager EMEA-INTEL).
