The Research, Science and Statistics of Environmental Issues

Wednesday 12 November 2003
15.00-17.30 hours
European Parliament, Brussels
Room ASP A3E2

PROGRAMME

   Wednesday, 12 November 2003

   15.00
Introduction by Giles Chichester MEP, EPP-ED co-ordinator on the Committee on Industry, External Trade, Research and Energy

   15.10
Debate on the research, science and statistics of environmental issues between:

Bjorn Lomborg, Director of the Environmental Assessment Institute, Copenhagen and author of The Sceptical Environmentalist
and
Tom Burke, Trustee of the Green Alliance and author of Ten Pinches of Salt, a reply to Bjorn Lomborg

Bjorn Lomborg is the controversial Danish statistician who made headlines in 2000 when he published his critique of the environmental movement, "The Sceptical Environmentalist", which challenged the view that the state of the Earth is in continual decline. Tom Burke is a director of the Green Alliance in Britain, who has rebuked Lomborg's claims on several occasions, notably in his pamphlet "Ten pinches of salt: a reply to Bjorn Lomborg". The two have debated on previous occasions, and the debate in the European Parliament on 12 November promises to be an entertaining and thought-provoking event.

   17.15 - 17.30
