Treaty Nice


The European People’s Party

  • aware that a referendum on the ratification of the Treaty of Nice is soon to be held in Ireland;
  • believing that this Treaty is necessary for the enlargement of the European Union to proceed on an equitable and effective basis;
  • recognising the important role that has been played by Ireland in the development of the Union since 1973;
  • noting the Declaration of the Seville European Council of June 2002 concerning Irish defence policy;
  • conscious that Fine Gael is leading the campaign in favour of the Treaty in Ireland
  • reaffirms its commitment to the enlargement of the European Union, which is provided for in the Treaty of Nice.
  • looks forward to a positive reaffirmation of the Irish peoples’ commitment to the European project.
  • reiterates that the smaller Member States will continue to have a vital role in the future development of the Union.
