Treaty Nice


The European People’s Party

aware that a referendum on the ratification of the Treaty of Nice is soon to be held in Ireland;

believing that this Treaty is necessary for the enlargement of the European Union to proceed on an equitable and effective basis;

recognising the important role that has been played by Ireland in the development of the Union since 1973;

noting the Declaration of the Seville European Council of June 2002 concerning Irish defence policy;

conscious that Fine Gael is leading the campaign in favour of the Treaty in Ireland

reaffirms its commitment to the enlargement of the European Union, which is provided for in the Treaty of Nice.

looks forward to a positive reaffirmation of the Irish peoples’ commitment to the European project.

reiterates that the smaller Member States will continue to have a vital role in the future development of the Union.
