27/06/2000: Mr Hans-Gert Poettering, Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament regrets the passing of Pierre PFLIMLIN

"President Pierre PFLIMLIN has left us today. His life as a European militant, his statesmanship which called him to exercise the highest political responsibilities in his country and in the European Institutions, his role in the bringing together of the Franco-German co-operation, were exemplary.

He was a respected member of the EPP Group where, since 1979, I had the honour to know and appreciate him. President of the European Parliament from 1984 to 1987, he gave to this office his particular style and authority. He was committed to a strong and democratic European Union founded on humanist values reflecting great ambitions for our continent's place in the world.

Pierre PFLIMLIN never hid his federalist convictions because he experienced two world wars and lived as an Alsatian at the heart of Franco-German antagonism. With Robert SCHUMAN, when the development of the European Community was involved he was always present and active. In difficult circumstances, he showed courage and determination.

For him, Europe was peace, a priceless gem.

President PFLIMLIN will remain a model for our actions and values.

In the name of the EPP-ED Group, I address to his family, to the town of Strasbourg, to Alsace where he was a favourite and much loved son and to all his French compatriots, my more sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy ".
