The aim of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme is to help EU Member States achieve their commitments to limit or reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a cost-effective way. Allowing participating companies to buy or sell emission allowances means that emission cuts can be achieved at the least cost economically.
On Thursday 15 May, Avril Doyle MEP addressed the hearing 'The future of the EU Emissions Trading System' on the Commission’s post-2012 proposal which took place in the Hemicycle of the European Parliament. The hearing comprised four thematic sessions focusing on allocation, competitiveness, scope and operation and the international dimension. If adopted, Doyle's report will be one of the most important pieces of legislation to come out of the European Parliament during the 2004-2009 mandate.
