Classification and labelling of substances

The EU is implementing a UN agreement on the worldwide harmonisation of the classification and labelling of chemical substances, the so-called Globalised System for Classification and Labelling (GHS). Amalia Sartori MEP (Italy) presents her reports on the subject to plenary in Brussels on Wednesday 3rd September in the the European Parliament. The Parliament and Council have reached agreement on the new provisions that create a level playing-field for producers and more transparency for consumers. The EU's chemicals policy REACH will be based on the new classification.

Workshop on the future of the EU Emissions Trading System
Avril Doyle MEP (EPP-ED, Ireland)

Emissions Trading Scheme

Avril Doyle MEP is Rapporteur for the European Parliament on the Commission's Proposal for a Directive on the Review of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS).
The aim of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme is to help EU Member States achieve their commitments to limit or reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a cost-effective way. Allowing participating companies to buy or sell emission allowances means that emission cuts can be achieved at the least cost economically.

On Thursday 15 May, Avril Doyle MEP addressed the hearing 'The future of the EU Emissions Trading System' on the Commission’s post-2012 proposal which took place in the Hemicycle of the European Parliament. The hearing comprised four thematic sessions focusing on allocation, competitiveness, scope and operation and the international dimension. If adopted, Doyle's report will be one of the most important pieces of legislation to come out of the European Parliament during the 2004-2009 mandate.
