Cuba after Castro

A joint conference of the Robert Schuman Foundation and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation on the future of Cuba will be hosted by Vice-Chairman of the EPP-ED Group Jaime Mayor Oreja MEP (Spain) on 13 and 14 May.

'Transition scenarios at the end of the Castro era' will be the main subject of debate between MEPs, members of both foundations and representatives of several Cuban pro-democratic movements of different political views, as well as experts from the European Commission, US State Department. Blanca Reyes, of the 'Damas de Blanco' (Ladies in White) organisation awarded with the Sakharov Prize in 2005, and Cuban independent journalist Alejandro González Raga, who has spent 14 years in Cuban prisons, will also address the conference.

The conference takes place in the Committee of the Regions building, room JDE 51, on Rue Belliard in Brussels. The opening session takes place on Tuesday 13 May at 3pm. The second part of the conference begins at 9.00am on Wednesday and ends at 1.15pm.

Jaime Mayor Oreja will hold a press conference on "Cuba: transition scenarios after the Castro era" in the European Parliament on 14 May at 11.00am.
