EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament

The European Parliament debates the issue of illegal immigration in the European Union and the Frontex agency on Wednesday 23 April. The debate follows an initiative by EPP-ED MEPs Simon Busuttil (Malta) and Agustín Diaz de Mera (Spain).
The European Council and Commission will make statements to Parliament on the external action of the EU and Frontex, the European agency that manages operational cooperation of Europe's external borders.
Despite the many efforts of the Commission and of the EU Frontex Agency, it does not appear that the phenomenon of illegal immigration is under control and the EPP-ED Group and the European Parliament are concerned that Member States are not helping the agency sufficiently. The debate will be led by Simon Busuttil MEP, who is from Malta, a country which shoulders a disproportionate share of the burden of waves of illegal immigration due to its geographical position.
Earlier this year, Commissioner Frattini revealed his proposals on illegal immigration, including plans to review the remit of Frontex and widen its mandate, the establishment a European surveillance network and a proposal to regulate the entry and exit of non-EU nationals into EU territory.
