Key Issue: Support for Research and Development SMEs

9 April 2008

Vote on participation by the Community in a programme aimed at supporting research and development-performing SMEs
Paul Rübig MEP (EPP-ED, Austria)
The European Parliament debates a report by Paul Rübig on Community participation in a research and development programme called EUROSTARS, aimed at supporting research and development-performing SMEs, during its mini-plenary session in Brussels.
The European Commission will contribute €100m to the programme while the participation of the Member States and associated countries is estimated at over €300m over a six-year period.

Among the priorities of the EPP-ED Group on this issue is the eligibility criteria for SMEs in terms of investment, full-time equivalent and the percentage of annual turnover spent in research activities. The report proposes an evaluation of the criteria after two years in order to make room for adjustments.
It's essential that SMEs can get their funding via this programme without too much red tape. Securing a transparent and non-bureaucratic system allowing SMEs to participate easily was the main concern of the EPP-ED Group.
