It's very important now that we insist in keeping the values connected to our identity and play a role on a world scale. It's very important that we keep these specific features of ours, so that we avail ourselves of globalisation without being crushed by it...

Key Issue: European agenda for culture in a globalising world

10 April 2008

Press Conference on 'Cultural Agenda in a globalising world' and 'Cultural Industries in Europe'
Vasco Graça Moura MEP (EPP-ED, Portugal)

The cultural sector in Europe plays an important role. If Europe is placed in the vanguard of all the continents it is because of its cultural heritage, says the report, drafted by Vasco Graça Moura MEP (Portugal).

In an increasingly globalised world, there is an evermore pressing need to assert and strengthen the European identity, without detracting from the diversity of the cultures existing among the peoples of Europe.

A report on the European Agenda for Culture by Vasco Graça Moura adopted this Thursday, 10 April 2008 in plenary, examines the first systematic attempt to move towards a European strategy for culture. It focuses on three main aims: promoting cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, promoting culture as a catalyst for creativity within the Lisbon Strategy and promoting culture as an essential element in the EU’s external relations.
