Cancer in the EU

Miroslav OUZKÝ MEP
EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament

Miroslav Ouzký MEP (Czech Republic), Chairman of the Committee on Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety, asks the Commission to set a date to adopt a recommendation for a comprehensive EU cancer control strategy on Wednesday 9th April during Parliament's mini-plenary in Brussels.

Cancer claims the lives of 1 million people in the EU every year. It's a major health burden, set to increase even more as Europeans live longer, surviving other diseases. The strategy needs to address four basic factors: prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment and care, including palliative care. Ouzký also wants the Commission to update and strengthen screening guidelines in order to save lives, in addition to setting up so-called reference networks for rare and difficult-to-treat cancers.
