National Milk Quotas in 2008
The European Parliament's Committee on Agriculture voted today on the report on Milk Quotas. The issue gained significant importance in the last months due to rapidly growing prices of milk and dairy products. Elisabeth Jeggle MEP (EPP-ED, Germany) is the rapporteur.
The national Milk Quotas for the EU Member States producers are the only part of the 2003 reform of the Common Agriculture Policy remaining to be implemented. The original quota increase of 0.5% in 11 Member States has been changed by the European Commission to an increase of 2% of the 2008/2009 milk quota period. This represents an additional 2.84 million tons of milk for European consumers.
Elisabeth Jeggle MEP addresses the question of whether the market offers enough opportunities for additional quantities of milk to be supplied if the national quotas were to be expanded for all 27 Member States and calls on the Commission to devise a European balancing mechanism for the quota for the marketing year 2008/09.
