On Thursday 24 January, the Industry, Research and Energy Committee debate in a public hearing, the importance of an EU Energy Agency from a regulatory as well as stakeholder point of view with key contributions from rapporteur Renato Brunetta MEP (Italy).

The establishment of an Agency for the Cooperation of Energy regulators will be a crucial part of the new energy package. The aim of the package is to move the energy market from liberalisation stage towards a stage where competition is genuine and sustainable. An EU Agency is therefore essential to overcome issues that cannot be solved by national regulators. The objective is to progressively scale down regulation of the energy sector until the rules applying are competition rules.
