The Legal Affairs committee is organising a hearing on the legal aspects of the directive on the protection of the environment through criminal law in the European Parliament. The hearing will be opened by the Chairman of the Committee Giuseppe Gargani MEP (EPP-ED, Italy) and moderated by Hartmut Nassauer MEP (EPP-ED, Germany).

The hearing takes place in room ASP 3E2 from 15.45 on 19 December. It will respond to the recent judgment of the European Court of Justice in Case C-440/05 Commission vs. Council in which it decided that environmental protection might be enforced through referral to criminal law by the European Community. The European Council recently proposed an EU Directive on this issue. The Hearing will thoroughly discuss the legal implications and impact of the future Directive.

Rapporteur of the European Parliament's report on the proposed directive is Hartmut Nassauer MEP. Among other speakers will include law practitioners and academics from Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and Hungary.
