The European Parliament is to debate reports on the general budget of the EU for 2008. The rapporteur for the budget of the European Parliament and other institutions is Ville Itälä MEP (EPP-ED, Finland).
The debate in the Parliament follows the conciliation meeting with the European Council on 23 November. The European Parliament's negotiators were successful on a number of issues, in line with commitments under the Lisbon strategy. The budget focuses mainly on support for further development. For the first time, Structural and Cohesion funds represent the highest share of the Commission's budget.
Among other achievements are the allocation of a "fresh" 70 million euro for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, a solution to the financing of the Galileo satellite navigation system, and the new European Institute of Technology (EIT). The Parliament has also secured a rise of its own budget to 1.4 billion euro.
