On Tuesday 11 December, Parliament will debate a report authored by Giuseppe Castiglione MEP on the reform of the EU’s Common Market Organisation for wine. A comprehensive reform has been proposed, and the rapporteur has successfully achieved a compromise to ensure that focus is on quality rather than quantity, in order to maintain and enhance Europe’s position as world market leader through better promotion and stimulating competitiveness.
The compromise also favours an upholding of the current EU budget for the wine sector of €1.23 billion per year and to freeze the proposal for a full liberalisation of vine planting rights.
