EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament

The European Parliament has amended the 1997 Television Without Frontiers Directive on Thursday, 29th November. The author of the parliamentary report is Ruth Hieronymi MEP (EPP-ED, Germany).

The new directive will deepen the internal market for audiovisual services and modernise rules for digital era TV. The aim is to establish a modernised and flexible framework for TV broadcasts, especially in response to technological advances in this area, such as video on demand and mobile TV.

National media markets will be opened to more competition from other EU countries. Product placement in TV programmes will become more transparent. Member States will be able to block internet content which is dangerous to children.

EPP-ED Rapporteur Ruth Hieronymi said that this is a good opportunity to ensure that television can be of benefit both economically and culturally.

A press conference is scheduled for 1.30pm in the Press Centre (PHS 0A50) of the European Parliament.
