Following an EPP-ED Group initiative, the European Parliament adopted by an overwhelming majority on Thursday 25th October a Joint Motion for a Resolution on rising feed and food prices.
The Group has also asked the Commission to investigate current supermarket food price increases.
Chairman of Parliament's Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development Neil Parish MEP (United Kingdom) pointed out that consumers are facing cost hikes for bread of around 30 to 40 per cent, despite just a 10 per cent rise in wheat prices.
World grain prices have increased dramatically in recent months and public and private cereal stocks have fallen to their lowest level in 40 years. Commissioner for Agriculture Marianne Fischer Boel has predicted a 30% price increase in meat and meat products in 2008.
The Commissioner welcomed the Group's initiative and stressed that the situation is a global one.
