On Wednesday, Parliament debated EU-Turkey relations with the Council and the Commission. Parliament will also vote on a Resolution drafted by the Rapporteur on Turkey, Ria Oomen-Ruijten MEP (Netherlands). The Resolution addresses issues which the Commission should focus on while examining Turkey's progress. More importantly, the Resolution aims to widen the scope of the Commission's progress report which will be presented in November.

It calls on the newly-elected Turkish Government, which benefits from a strong mandate and popular trust, to accelerate reforms in order to remove shortcomings regarding fundamental rights, including the rights of religious minorities, and the functioning of the judiciary in order to fulfil the commitments defined in the Accession Partnership.
