Communication Infrastructure for the Schengen Information System

On Tuesday 23 October, Parliament adopted two reports by Carlos Coelho MEP (Portugal) on two proposals - for a Council decision and a Council regulation - on the installation, operation and management of a Communication Infrastructure for the Schengen Information System (SIS) environment.

The general objective of the Commission proposals, which are crucial for maintaining an area without internal border control, is to provide a temporary fall-back solution enabling SIS operations to continue when the current SISNET contract expires on 13 November 2008, and until the migration to SIS II is completed on 17 December 2008, should the Council tendering procedure not result in the conclusion of an agreement or contract for the provision of the services required for the SIS environment.
