Avril Doyle MEP (Ireland), Member of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee, is hosting a meeting on Wednesday 17 October in order to highlight the issue of Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAIs), which requires pan-European leadership and coordination.

The meeting brings together patients, health experts and doctors from across the EU with representatives from the Commission, the European Centre for Disease Control, the World Health Organisation and several MEPs.

According to the European Commission, there are approximately three million Healthcare Associated Infections which are the cause of 50,000 deaths in the European Union each year. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in its First Report on Communicable Diseases (published in June 2007) noted that up to 30% of HCAIs are preventable.

The meeting takes place in the Members Salon, Ground floor in the European Parliament at 12.30 -14.00.
