EU-Turkey relations

Dutch MEP Ria Oomen-Ruijten's report on the progress and recent developments in Turkey will be voted on in the Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, 3rd October. The report calls on the newly-elected Turkish Government, which benefits from a strong mandate and popular trust, to accelerate reforms in order to remove shortcomings, including regarding fundamental human rights and functioning of the judiciary.

The rapporteur welcomes Turkey's fair elections, positive economic development and its efforts to align itself to EU energy legislation. However, she urges the new government to fully implement the provisions stemming from the Association agreement, especially with respect to the freedom of expression.
