Parliament adopts resolution on Burma

Parliament showed its solidarity on Thursday 27th September with the pro-democracy movement currently demonstrating against the Burmese regime. The resolution was adopted by 563 votes to 3 with 4 abstentions. MEPs condemned the brutal reaction of the Burmese Junta and called for the international community to prepare additional measures, including "targeted economic sanctions" against the regime should it fail to respond to the call for democracy.

MEPs applauded the peaceful demonstrations by Burmese monks and tens of thousands of others, and called on the UN Security Council to urgently address the situation. Joseph Daul, Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament, expressed his concern on the worsening situation, especially regarding those killed at the hands of the Burmese security forces.
