Mediterranean Dialogue - Parliamentarians in Amman
The EPP-ED Group MEPs and parliamentarians from the Euromed partner countries are meeting on 4-5 December in Amman, Jordan. The International conference "From Barcelona to the Neighbourhood Policy" is organised by the EPP-ED Group and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.
Among the participants are Antonios Trakatellis MEP (Greece), Vice-President of the European Parliament, Vito Bonsignore MEP, Vice-Chairman of the EPP-ED Group (Italy), Othmar Karas MEP, Vice-Chairman of the EPP-ED Group (Austria), Michael Gahler MEP (Germany), Simon Busuttil MEP (Malta), Jana Hybášková MEP (Czech Republic), Hubert Pirker MEP (Austria) and members of parliaments of Jordan, Algeria, Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, Palestine.
The conference focussed on the relations between the EU and the Mediterranean countries, the relations between Mediterranean countries themselves and the role of parliamentarians in this process, but also the Middle East peace process was mentioned.
The political foundation of the Mediterranean Dialogue is based both on the Barcelona Process (strengthening the Partnership also with the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly – EMPA) and on the European Neighbourhood Policy (idea launched in 2003 by the European Commission opening the bilateral dialogue on initiative of the EPP-ED Group).
The Euro-Mediterranean Assembly has several important functions: to develop political dialogue, to promote economic and cultural exchanges and to discuss parliamentary issues like the democratic development, checks and balances through legislation and the involvement of civil societies and political parties
