Enlargement Strategy Report adopted

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament has adopted the report on future EU enlargement strategy on Thursday 23 November. The report was drafted by the Chairman of the committee Elmar Brok MEP (EPP-ED, Germany) and adopted by a clear majority.

Its key point is that future enlargement rounds must not undermine the European Union's political stability. The report also asks for the European Parliament's right of assent to apply not just after the conclusion of the negotiations process, but also before the opening of membership negotiations.

The report thus demands to examine the integration capacity of the Union just as regularly and intensively as the integration progress of new Member States. As EU integration capacity depends particularly on its institutional effectiveness, its financial resources and the pursuit of its political objectives, overstretching the Union would have serious consequences.
