CAP reform - modulation of direct payments

Lutz GOEPEL MEP
EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament
The European Parliament will debate today a report of German MEP Lutz Goepel. The aim of the report concerning the modulation of direct payments is to safeguard the future of the farming industry in the EU, following the most recent reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

The Rapporteur rejects attempts to reduce (modulate) direct payments by up to 20% on a purely optional basis, as this would amount to nothing more than a re-nationalisation of the CAP. The report has already been adopted in the Agricultural committee of the European Parliament. Lutz Goepel hopes, that the European Parliament will confirm the rejection of the European Commission proposal to make any further changes to the actual CAP-reform which is valid until 2014.
