The report on NAIADES, the proposal for an Inland Waterway Transport Programme for the European Union, by Dutch MEP Corien Wortmann-Kool is to be debated on Wednesday 25 October in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The report states that Europe should exploit more of its free capacity on inland waterways as part of the multi-modal transport links across the EU and neighbouring countries.

The report on NAIADES (named after the Greek mythological fresh-water nymphs) was already adopted by the Transport Committee of the European Parliament on 13 September. The committee has stressed that priority has to be given to inland waterway transport - more European money should be allocated to a European waterway transport innovation fund and also to infrastructure projects and the traffic management system: River Information Services (RIS).
